Assistant Professor of Political Science,
University of Dayton
Joshua Ambrosius is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and core faculty member in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. He is also a Senior Research Fellow with the Center for Sustainable Urban Neighborhoods at the University of Louisville, directed by one of Planetizen's "Top 100 Urban Thinkers," Dr. John Gilderbloom. He previously taught at the Johns Hopkins University, the University of Louisville, and West Virginia State University and served as the Director of the Judith A. Herndon Fellowship for the West Virginia Legislature.
Dr. Ambrosius received his Ph.D. in public policy and administration from the School of Urban and Public Affairs (SUPA) at the University of Louisville (UofL) in Kentucky where he received the prestigious University Fellowship, passed his field exams with distinction, and received the Graduate Dean's Citation. His dissertation on religion's impact on the 2000 city-county consolidation referendum in Louisville was awarded the Outstanding Dissertation Award.
Previously, he received a Master of Public Policy (MPP) degree from the Johns Hopkins University's Institute for Policy Studies in Baltimore, Maryland. He simultaneously completed a Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Dr. Lester Salamon's Center for Civil Society Studies and the Carey Business School. While in Baltimore, he was mentored in community and organizational development by esteemed community organizer Joe McNeely, J.D., founder of the Development Training Institute. As an undergraduate, he studied politics, philosophy, and international and religious studies and graduated with a B.A., magna cum laude, from York College of Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Chi, and Pi Sigma Alpha honor societies.
Dr. Ambrosius’ work is motivated by an overarching desire for long-term human sustainability. His policy interests include urban and housing policy, faith-based social policy, and space exploration. His research specifically explores urban and regional governance, housing markets and policy, and religious preferences for institutional design. His peer-reviewed academic work has appeared in the Journal of Urban Affairs, the American Review of Public Administration, Housing Policy Debate, Journal of Urbanism, and the Interdisciplinary Journal of Research on Religion. He has varied experience conducting survey research for a National Science Foundation grant; directing legislative and administrative internships, on and off-campus; evaluating government programs for the U.S. Department of Labor; working on the federal Faith-Based & Community Initiative; organizing for positive development in Baltimore’s impoverished and neglected central city neighborhoods; creating a nonprofit coalition and organization from scratch; lobbying the Maryland General Assembly for safe housing laws; and serving the poor of Haiti.
